I lost my enjoyment of Dancing with the Stars a couple of seasons ago. I just didn't find myself caring enough for the "celebrities" that they were pulling in any more. I'm going to try my best this season to at least give it a shot in its first few weeks.

This time around, I'm caring a bit more about a few of the celebs who they've got on the show, but I could really care less about Kendra, Romeo, Chelsey Kane, Wendy Williams or Psycho Mike. Bring Out the Big Guns

It's the end-all be-all. The Big Dance. The Grand-daddy of... Wait, that's a different game. It's the Super Bowl baby! And the Packers are back in after 13 years of watching from the couch. Consider these nuggets of information before I move on to my prediction:

- Everytime the Packers made it to the Super Bowl, they've gone the following year and won their first appearance. (Super Bowls 1+2 and 31+32)

- The Steelers are comfortable in the Super Bowl. This is their third appearance in six years. The Patriots were comfortable too, after winning three in four years, but the Giants knocked them out 17-14 in Super Bowl 42.

- Mike Holmgren took the Packers to the Super Bowl in his fifth year with the Packers and won. This is the fifth year for Mike McCarthy as head coach of the Green and Gold.

Should be a very hard fought game and I'm of course going with the Packers, and I think they'll have a bit more offense than the Steelers can handle. I say it's Packers 28 Steelers 24 and the Lombardi Trophy is coming home!

Rather than watching the worst football game of the year known as the Pro Bowl, I actually enjoyed a healthy does of the Winter X Games, and they certainly didn't disappoint. There were plenty of firsts this year, such as the first ever triple-cork by Torstein Horgmo in men's snowboard big air, the first female 1080 by Kelly Clark, a double-rider backflip in snowmobile best trick and Shaun White's double mctwist to secure another four-peat. I highly recommend you check out the impressive display by these athletes every year. Great stuff.

Razzie Season is Here!

What are the worst movies of 2010? Well, that's what the Razzies are for. Helping us find out what movies are laughably bad throughout each and every year. The nominees were announced a day before the Oscars were made public and typically they're handed out the night before as well. Typically the industry likes avoiding any kind of mention in the Razzies, but there have been a handful of people who embraced them, including Halle Berry and Sandra Bullock.

Sandra "won" the award for worst actress for her role in All About Steve. She showed up with a whole bunch of copies of the movie on DVD and told the audience that if they watched the movie from start to finish and really believed that she still deserved the award, then she'd come back and give a line-by-line reading of the script to get notes and find out what she could have done better. If she didn't deserve it, then she'd give back the trophy and go drink with them. Sounds like a good deal, no? Somehow I doubt she'll follow through on that though, considering she also won an Oscar that year for The Blind Side.

Gotta Get My Gear

Last time the Packers were in the Super Bowl, I was on the younger side of the spectrum. I won't give away my age, but let's just say that I wasn't able to purchase any of the new gear declaring them champs. This time around I still don't really have that kind of disposable income, but I think I realize how seldom this can happen for a team.

I think I want to go for a sweatshirt for the NFC and then go the route of the hat for the Super Bowl, but I'm not too sure. Maybe NFC t-shirt and then Super Bowl sweatshirt. The problem arises if they can't get the W in the big dance, but they're destined to win, right?!

The Big Dance!

Can you even believe it?! I still don't think that its sunk in just yet, but my goodness the Packers are heading to the Super Bowl! Aaron Rodgers certainly didn't have his best outing, but it was just enough as the defense stepped up their game once again to put the Chicago Bears away 21-14.

The only thing that I have to complain about today is that all of the national media are focusing their stories on Jay Cutler and questioning whether he gave up on his team. Ever since he was a player in the NFL, I never really cared for Cutler. Mostly because of his sideline attitude and generally terrible body language. He never seems to give two "you-know-whats" about what's happening with his team.

I will say though, that if he did indeed take himself out of the game, he made the right decision. If he had stayed in, I wouldn't have been surprised if the Packers won 28-0. Once he came out and they replaced Collins with Hanie, the Bears got some life (albeit alongside two VERY important interceptions). The good news is that after today and maybe a little tomorrow, the focus will once again be on the Green Bay Packers as they prepare for their match-up with the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV!

Let's Learn from 2007

We know that the Packers play the Bears this Sunday. We know that it's for a chance to play in Super Bowl 45. We know that having to listen to Bears fan rub it in forever should the Packers fall would be unbearable. We also know what it's like to fall short of the Super Bowl by one play when the Packers lost to the New York Giants at home in overtime.

Call me crazy, but I think that gives the Packers the slightest of advantages. There are quite a few players on the team that experienced that bitter taste after the loss and really understand how big of a chance this is. With that, I will predict a defensively dominated outcome with the Packers on top 17-14 when it's all said and done. I'm still nervous as hell and that should amplify over the weekend, but if you can't pick the home team when it's all on the line are you truly a fan?

NFL - It's conference championship weekend and the official site of the NFL has plenty of story lines to keep you busy until kickoff.

He's Back!

After a whole bunch of turmoil surrounding the MGM bankruptcy filings and being picked up by Spyglass, the 23rd James Bond movie is finally a go! No word yet on what will be featured in the plot or what lovely lady will be the next Bond girl, but here's hoping that the flick lives up to the two previous Daniel Craig entries. They're easily my favorite Bond movies (closely followed by Goldeneye) and I'm super excited for November of 2012 when this hits theaters.

Victory

I predicted a 21-20 victory for the Packers this time around, so I'm pretty happy that the margin of victory was a little more than that. Sure didn't feel like it though, did it? Seems like the whole momentum of the game changed after James Jones dropped the late second quarter strike from Aaron Rodgers and the Eagles came swooping back. Good thing James Starks is an animal. It was awesome to see some dynamic running for the Packers, the likes of which we haven't seen since he ran well the last time McCarthy trusted him with the ball. Definitely looking forward to what can happen with him in the backfield this weekend. I'll put my prediction in writing this time and I'll say Packers win 28-24 over the Falcons. Tune in to find out if I'm right with pre-game at 5:00pm and kickoff at 7:00 on K107.1 this Saturday!

Belated 2010 Favorites Part 3

And for the finale, I'll take a look at my favorite movies of 2010. I didn't see a whole lot this year, but there were certainly a few that I enjoyed.

Inception
This is on everyone's list, right? If you haven't seen it, do it. I didn't dig it quite as much as the general populous, but I definitely think it's worth a viewing. Christopher Nolan is my favorite director and Leo is fast becoming my favorite actor. It's a great combination and one of the most beloved movies of 2010.

Shutter Island
More Leo. Originally set for a 2009 release, it got pushed back to February of 2010. It's really a great character piece here with fantastic acting. I'm a fan of the movie up until the final 15 minutes. I thought the ending was a sort of cop-out, but I know there are plenty of people out there that loved the twist. If you're looking for a thriller that doesn't make you jump, then check it out.

Jackass 3D
You already know if you'll like this movie or not. If you have no desire to see anything with Knoxville and his posse, then this movie won't turn you. But if you're a fan of their previous "work" and maybe were getting tired of it, this is just the movie that will get you amped for more shenanigans. I was crying from laughing so hard. It's literally non-stop. Literally.

Machete
This is another one that you'll know whether or not you'll like it before you even step into the theatre. It's capitalizing on the exploitation genre that's seemed to come back since Grindhouse hit a few years back. The cameos really set this movie well past my expectations and I'll always remember that, "Machete doesn't text."

Toy Story 3
Simply delightful. I heard from many people that they were crying or almost crying at the end of it and knowing that, I thought that I'd be prepared and wouldn't be too affected emotionally. Turns out I almost cried regardless. It wasn't the last scene that got me, but the one right before it. The maturity that Pixar delivers to their audience is second-to-none and I give them all the credit in the world for not talking down to kids like so many other studios do.

Belated 2010 Favorites Part 2

For the second part of my 2010 favorites I thought I'd take a gander at some of my favorite games of the year.

Mass Effect 2
This hit the scene way back in January of 2010 and it held up as one of the most complete experiences in the industry. The refinements found in this sequel over the first Mass Effect game really launched it into the mainstream very effectively. Solid shooting mechanics with an expansive branching storyline throughout a massive universe to explore really hit on all cylinders. Can't wait until Mass Effect 3!

Picross 3D
I'm not sure if there's a game I spent more time with than Picross 3D for the Nintendo DS. The game really eases you into the puzzle solving mechanics and the whole design plays well in short or marathon game sessions. I love me some puzzle games, and Nintendo may have made the definitive one for me.

God of War 3
Kratos came back for some more violent revenge on Sony's Playstation 3 this year, and it was as beautiful as ever. Granted, the formula for the series hasn't changed much since the first God of War game, but the minor tweaks that were made and the amazing visuals really rounded out an engrossing experience. Certainly not for the faint of heart or easily offended, but I'm not sure you could find a better character action game.

Red Dead Redemption
I'm not sure that I loved this game as much as everyone else, but I have to give it props for the most beautiful landscape I've ever played in. Even with the impressive environments, I think my favorite thing about Red Dead would be the characters and story of our protagonist, John Marston. The ending and denouement are something I've never seen before in a game.

Super Meat Boy
This game is nuts. Plain and simple. The creators of this game, Team Meat, set out to make an insanely difficult 2D platformer that would punish the player. Well, mission accomplished Team Meat. I found myself playing this game into all hours of the night just trying to get past, "one more level." The incredible art style and fantastic level design really stand out for this game. Throw in hundreds of levels with excruciating difficulty, and you've got yourself one addicting piece of software.

Belated 2010 Favorites

I've been thinking that it's time I went through a list of my favorite media in 2010. I'm not going to do a top 10 list because I frankly don't care to rank things by number (and I'm not sure I could fit 10 of each on these posts), but I will at least go over the games, albums and movies I enjoyed the most throughout the past year. I think I'll go ahead and start with music and then move on from there. So without further ado, here are my favorite albums from 2010 in no particular order!

Enemy of the World - Four Year Strong
I've listened to this album so many times this year, it's crazy. They're full length debut "Rise or Die Trying" hooked me right away and ever since 2007 I've been craving more. Their sophomore effort is certainly no slump. With anthems like, "Wasting Time" and "It Must Really Suck to be Four Year Strong Right Now" and the driving bass drum for "What the Hell is a Gigawatt," don't disappoint if you're ever looking for a way to kick your adrenaline into overdrive.

Steel Train - Steel Train
This album really caught me off guard. Before you continue reading this, go buy it if you haven't yet. Seriously, it's only $5.00 on Amazon right now. You'll thank me later. Go ahead, I'll wait... All good? Alright, now that you own it, you don't need me to tell you how awesome this is. You're already enjoying "Bullet," "Turnpike Ghost," "Touch Me Bad," and every other track on this album.

Would It Kill You? - Hellogoodbye
The departure that these guys took on their music was risky, but well worth it. After finally leaving Drive-Thru Records, Forest and crew changed from their synth-heavy dance pop into something that can only really be described (by me) as ukulele-rock. It's truly impressive how they were able to go from a tween sensation to everything the music industry needs right now: Solid, tight pop music.

Perch Patchwork - Maps and Atlases
So unique. That's the first thing that will pop into your head the first time you listen to Maps and Atlases. Then you'll think that they're using some sort of synthisizer to get the sound their producing. That is, until you see them actually perform and realize it's all from guitars! Super impressive and incredibly intoxicating, especially once you get the, "this is so new and bizarre" feeling to leave your ears and take it for what it's worth.

I strongly recommend you pick up at least one or two of these (mostly Steel Train and Hellogoodbye for broad appeal). You can't go wrong with any of these, and they are certainly my most listened to albums of 2010.

Bargaineering - This site is a little different in its financial survival approach than most of the other ones I've featured. Rather than making money the end all be all, the folks at this site take a look at how your financial decisions can make your life better while putting family and friends first. The best example of that is their article about buying a term life insurance policy off your parents. Heavy stuff when you're looking to profit on the death of your life-givers.

I Was Half Right...

If you listen at all to the Second Shift, you'll know that I predicted the Packers to win this weekend 31-28 over the Patriots and that Matt Flynn would bust out something special and surprise everyone. Unfortunately, I was only half right as the Pats pounced on the Pack 31-27. Matt Flynn did a great job last night in Foxboro, but unfortunately it wasn't quite enough after another special teams gaff that let a right guard run 71 yards on a kickoff return and some questionable play calling on the 1-yard-line that resulted in a Green Bay field goal instead of a touchdown.

The good news is that the Packers aren't completely out of it. If they can win their next two games, they get a spot in the playoffs as a wild card team. Unfortunately though, those are two tough games against the New York Giants and the Chicago Bears. It also essentially means the playoffs start right now for the Packers because with one more loss, they're done.

With any luck though, regardless of what happens, we'll be hoping that the injuries clear up next year and the Packers are back in contention for not only the division, but another ring.

Augmented Reality is a Reality!

I'm basically stealing this story from the dudes at Tested, but I had to make sure this got out there to the two or three of you who check this out.

It's a new app to throw into the augmented reality trend that smart phones are headed in. It reads Spanish text and then translates it into English seamlessly! The app is called Word Lens put out by Quest Visual, and you have to see it in action to believe how easily it works.

Right now it's just Spanish to English and vice versa, but get ready for new languages to roll out. It's just the start of what's to come in the form of augmented reality and our smart phones.

Double Bummer

The Wichita Eagle out of Kansas reported on a story about a Chiropractors office that was crashed into not once, but twice... in the same day! An elderly woman pulled into a parking space and rather than hitting the brake, she hit the gas and crashed through the window. Thankfully no one was hurt.

They boarded up the window for a bit until the window crew stopped by and replaced it a couple of hours later. Then, just five hours after the first accident, new window installed, another elderly driver went through! Again, no one was hurt, so that's good news.

I'm thinking that it's some kind of scam the chiropractor is running. Maybe there's some device in the parking lot that reverses the gas and brake pedals and when his unsuspecting victims go to park, they become a new patient ready for an alignment! It's all conjecture, but I think I'm on to something... Get me the President!

Aaron Rodgers is Only One Man

If you know me at all, you know that I have an undying love for Aaron Rodgers. He's easily in my top three man-crushes along with LeVar Burton and Ace Enders. However, if there's one thing about Aaron Rodgers that's tough to take is his 2-12 record in games decided by four points or less.

To call me an Aaron Rodgers apologist would probably be fairly accurate, as I would point out to anyone holding that record against him to the special teams in each of those games. However, after reading a fantastic write-up by Jason Wilde from ESPN Milwaukee, both sides have some truth to them.

As Wilde points out, Rodgers lead the team to a game tying or leading score in the fourth quarter and in the other three losses got them in field goal range only to see Crosby miss it. However, in a bunch of those games he also failed on a drive to maintain or hold the lead as well. Check out the full article for great recaps of each close loss and hope that analyzing the past prevents repeat mistakes in the future.

A Cliché Coming of Age Story

Today's post is going to date me a bit. Since the start of college back in 2003, I've greatly enjoyed the music of My Chemical Romance. I realize now that one could say their music had a level of immaturity and theatrics that leaned on the side of contrived, but I bought into it somethin' fierce. For better or worse, I thought that they had a good mix of catchy pop hooks and rock attitude. Granted, some of their "goth" look didn't really jive with me, but their music always did. I dove into their back catalog, bought concert dvds, saw live shows anytime they were anywhere in the state. I was edging on "superfan."

I know a lot of people rag on MCR and don't give them much credit. That was fine with me then, it's fine with me now. I can see why some would come to that conclusion. For me though, it was all about fun. I wanted music that was fun to listen to. I didn't care about whether the lyrics were thought provoking or if the song was complicated to perform or written in 7/16 time. I just wanted to enjoy quick, dirty and fast music. That still holds true for the bands that I listened to while "coming of age" in high school and college. You could say that I have rose-tinted glasses for MCR, New Found Glory, Blink-182 and the like. They're my high school sweethearts and they always get a free pass when they put out a new record.

Fast forward to today and I've moved on a bit in my music preferences. I'm listening to artists with (debate-ably) a bit more substance, though from time to time I've thrown on some MCR. After their five year hiatus, they're back with their new album, "Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys," and it's safe to say that they've moved on from their youth as well. However, even though they've moved more and more towards the pop side of their sound with each record, they've still maintained enough of their rock vibe to keep away from the full-on crossover. They had yet to put out their "American Idiot." But this time is different. Not to say they're comparable albums, but this is MCR's attempt at getting acceptance from parents. Songs that can get remixed and played in clubs. Songs that are catchy as hell and will have you humming along even if you hate them.

Leading up until now, they've always had a couple of tracks on each album that surprised me and were constantly changing as the song progressed. Songs like "Vampires Will Never Hurt You," "You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison," and more recently, "Mama." They always caught me a bit off guard. Not that they're a huge departure from the band's sound, but they stepped away from the feel of each of their respective albums to offer something different. A departure. A reprieve. Whatever you want to call it; they told a story that built a connection between the band and the listener (at least for me).

Granted, I've only been listening to, "Danger Days..." for a couple of days, but I feel like that record is missing that one song. As they've said in multiple interviews, the whole album is the story this time around rather than each track giving a mini-story around a central theme. They say rather than a concept album it's a, "high-concept album." However, I feel like each song fits almost too well. There aren't any more surprises that I remember from my college days. Nothing is catching me off guard. There's no "spark."

That's not to say that it's a bad album or I'm not enjoying it; I just feel like there isn't any more mystery in the relationship between MCR and myself. We're not high school sweethearts meeting up on the way to class any more. We've gotten to that "comfortable" phase where we either exchange rings and watch "Dancing With the Stars" with each other or move on to something more exciting. I plan on giving the new album a few more listens, and I'm sure I'll jump into their back catalog here-and-there, but I think it's another piece of my youth that hasn't stood the test of time. I'll always remember the good times we've had and wish them nothing but the best.

Yesterday, Apple posted a message on their website saying that today they would make an announcement that you would never forget. This morning they announce that The Beatles are now on iTunes. Wait, what?

Now, don't get me wrong. It's cool that one of, if not the, most iconic band now has all of their studio albums available for purchase digitally, but will we never forget this? I mean, true BeatleManiacs would already have all of the albums on vinyl or CD and they could have easily already ripped them and put them on their iPod. Wouldn't they?

Maybe Apple meant this is a day that they will never forget, considering the money they're about to make that they haven't seen since Michael Jackson passed away.

Books or Movies?

Everyone who sees movies based on books that they love seem to favor the book over the movie. I strongly believe that's because no director/actor/producer can replicate the quality of our own imaginations. Do you prefer one over the other?

I wonder how that applies to graphic novels... I mean, when it's all drawn for you, there's not much left to the imagination. I suppose you could say the art direction might not live up to the art in the books, but we'll see. Sure, I've seen Sin City, Watchmen and a variety of other movies based on graphic novels, but a lot of the time I saw the movie before the books (Watchmen excluded).

I have yet to check out Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World but I have read all of the books. I'll find out tonight after the shift whether or not the movie lives up to my opinion of the books. Here's hoping they deliver!

Get Kinected

At 12:01am today, Microsoft unleashed their latest peripheral for the Xbox 360: Kinect. You may have heard about Kinect from Ellen or Oprah already, but if not, it's the latest effort in motion gaming. Of course it all started with the Wii a number of years ago from Nintendo. Then, just a month or two ago Sony released Playstation Move for the Playstation 3, which is essentially a more precise, high definition version of what we've experienced on the Wii.

With Microsoft Kinect, they get rid of the controller and rely solely on motion capture. You are the controller. It also has voice command functionality I'm not super impressed with it yet since there's no real "killer app" available. Although, there have been good things said about Dance Central, Your Shape: Fitness Evolved and Kinectimals. Kotaku has a fantastic write-up that will give you everything you need to know before you decide to pick one of these up.

So I went in to vote today. Got registered with my new address and went through the polls rather quickly. The whole time I'm thinking, "Alright, get through the voting and get your sticker!" As we look back on all of the sugary treats that we've consumed over the weekend, it's time for us to say goodbye to Halloween 2010 and to look ahead to Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza and everything in between.

On Saturday I was doing a little shopping for some last minute costume additions and I came across full fledged Christmas departments already! It wasn't even Halloween yet! Are we really that in need of holiday decor that we need to be setup more than two months before? Not to mention everyone that leaves decorations up through January. Maybe we should just declare them holimonths rather than holidays.

Pumpkin Seeds: Treat of the Gods

While candy is all well and good on Halloween for the kids, I get my fill well before the big day of trick-or-treating. However, I really never reach my fill when it comes to delicious, nutritious (I can't back that up) pumpkin seeds! I'm hoping to carve out my pumpkin that I got from Pumpkins and More at Townline Tractor in Oshkosh and bake up the seeds it holds. I'll then chow down on them as I root on the Packers this Sunday. Sounds like a pumpkin-seed-perfect Halloween!

Not only that, but I missed almost all of the beat down the Packers put on the Vikings! I even predicted a close win for the Green and Gold and didn't get to enjoy it live. Sure, I checked out the highlights after, but that's not the same, is it? Oh well, here's hoping the second part of my prediction (that the Packers gain some momentum) holds up and I can watch every minute of that.

I hear a lot of talk about people who aren't at all excited about the Packers and Vikings match-up this Sunday. Why? They straight-up don't care. I'm not here to say they're wrong, but I simply can't say the same thing.

I remember last year when the Packers lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and afterward, everyone claimed, "The Packers' season is over! They suck! Fire Thompson and McCarthy!" The week after, everyone said that the Packers would get destroyed by the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night football. What happened though? The Packers defense stepped up and they got a win that lead to a five game winning streak and they finished the season 7-1 down the stretch.

Now, I understand that this year injuries play an even larger factor than last year, but I feel like this is the same situation. If the Packers can get a win over Brett Favre and the Vikings this Sunday night, they could get some momentum for a tough stretch against the Jets and Cowboys the next two weeks. It seems that when everyone counts out the Packers, that's when they're the most dangerous. Let's hope that holds up this weekend.

How cool is this?! It's a self-propelled monorail system called Shweeb. You sit in the pod, you pedal, and you freakin' take off! It was put together for a 2008 contest put on by Google to find an invention that will help all of mankind.

I'm a little late to party on this, but I would still love to see this start to get implemented. Granted, there are some impracticality to overcome, but how much fun would it be to pedal to work like this?!

Good News For a Change

They're on their way up! By tomorrow (provided everything keeps working) all 33 trapped miners in Chile should be back up to the surface with their families after spending two months trapped in a mine.

It's not too often that we hear about a tragedy like this and still find a happy ending. This will (hopefully) be one of those events that people will keep talking about. We'll see it pop up in trivia questions in the next version of Trivial Pursuit, so take notes!

Well, it turns out my gut feeling from last night turned out to be legit. I won't say that the Packers lost to the Bears 20-17 last night, but they definitely beat themselves on Monday Night Football.

18 total penalties for 158 yards prevented the Packers from ever gaining any momentum. They lost a touchdown because of a penalty, they gave the Bears a touchdown on a series of penalties and the only area the Bears seemed more effective was in the special teams play. Especially on a punt return from Devin Hester.

I also am a little bewildered on the end of game clock management by Mike McCarthy, but the good news is that Green Bay is still the better team. The bad news is that their record doesn't indicate that. As we all know, a win is a win is a win in the NFL and the Green and Gold didn't get it done. Here's hoping they get back on track this Sunday against Detroit at Lambeau.

Being a Lions Fan is Exhausting

Jon Carson knows that as well as anyone. Luckily, unlike Jon, I don't have to be a Lions fan any longer than four games a year, and two of those are already over. The bummer is that they had chances to win both! Granted, the one against the Bears was robbed from them, but yesterday the Vikings made so many mistakes. Of course, being the Lions, they made just a few more...

Apart from those 60 minutes four weeks a year, my blood runs Green and Gold and I can't wait until the Packers decimate the Bears in Chicago tonight. I have a funny feeling about this one, though. I'm not sure if it's the fact that it's Monday Night Football or that everyone is picking the Packers to roll over the Bears in the same way they picked the Pack to roll over Arizona in the playoffs last year, but something isn't right in my gut.

The good news is that my gut has no impact on the game. As long as Aaron Rodgers' and Clay Matthews' guts are feeling fine, then we should see the Pack start out 3-0.
